Five not really Haikus
Poetry and writing has become a positive outlet for processing things that happen during daily life in my career as a nurse. I work on an intensive care unit where I see the worst. I first wrote these Haiku-esk (they aren’t actually in Haiku structure but i’m a nurse not an english teacher) short poems as a discipline to draw on an experience in a concise, intentional way.
Forearm deep
pumping life inside
no amend
Holding hands
comforting others
a stranger
Causing pain
to save someone’s life
unthankful
Recognize
the pain in her eyes
her daughter
“Its painful”
covered in tattoos
“no needles”
Each of these hold a story. Most hold relationships lasting 12-36 hours where others are nothing more than a moment. There’s good, bad, sad, and funny and I hope to hold them all with respect.
